Officials in Tasmania are working to identify a rosy sludge that has appeared on a isolated coast, with some scientists anxious it could be an algal bloom.
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a section of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been noted on parts of another local beach and a separate bay.
Specimens have been taken and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A official remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in reaction to shifts in food sources, temperature, precipitation or light".
"They are at times called red or pink tides because the proliferations can change the water red," the official noted. "Only some algal blooms are harmful, with many species serving as a major source of energy for creatures in the marine food web."
"The usual source of reddish water in these seas is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can create luminous nighttime effects at night."
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their occurrence has increased in recent times, partly due to environmental shifts and contamination that combine to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that usually serve as the ocean's waste processors. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that disrupts the proper operation of aquatic systems.
These phenomena have been equated with underwater bushfires and can continue to grow as long as conditions are ripe. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be destroyed as sea creatures is killed or smothered, providing more nutrients for the outbreak.
A southern state recently grappled with a catastrophic algal bloom along its southern shore after a series of sea temperature spikes, which extended across an extensive zone. The event caused surfers with sore eyes and persistent coughs and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across 400 different species, according to official estimates.
A marine expert, who was involved in studying the start of South Australia's algal bloom stated, based on images of the local event, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There have been many of these events around the island of late," she remarked.
The scientist explained this organism did not produce harmful substances similar to the species involved in the previous devastating event, but it does eat microscopic animals and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.
"You usually see a bloom of this algae after a outbreak of a different species, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she added.
A campaigner, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in Tasmania, stated it looked like the suspected bloom had "increased notably" and suggested the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, referring to comparable events elsewhere.
"Thus we needs to send a strong warning here, the authorities and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to study the examples we've collected and we need to inform the public here," she said.
The scientist said she had concerns for community health after noticing a tingling sensation along her body while being splashed with tainted seawater.
An environmental foundation has reported deceased sea creatures and deceased marine life being found on the beach, with a veteran activist calling the event as an "natural disaster" and urging the state premier to inspect and "assume command the effort that officials must be making".
"He needs to understand this is a disaster in the unfolding, economically as well as environmentally."
Speaking to reporters, the leader said he was not aware of any connections between the algae outbreak and the farming business, emphasizing laboratory analysis was necessary before judgments could be drawn.
"We need to ensure our waterways are ecologically sound and long-lasting," he added.
"Numerous shorelines across the state are our assets and we need to ensure the community and our business sector can operate side-by-side to utilize our waterways efficiently and responsibly."
