France to begin stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands

French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the President asking him to back the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.

"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."

Currently, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.

Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.

The decision to intervene at all is a significant step forward, following a brief shift towards a stricter approach this summer, which ceased when the former government official departed from office.

That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.

Now French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.

Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for ways to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
